Oh god, these two break my heart, the dance of wounding each other with words, the revelation that they had been lovers once, all Maglor's sins and regrets and most of all his inability to say goodbye to Elrond who he clearly loves. As always your words are musical, particularly appropriate for such a story. I especially liked the clicking and clacking of porpoises and the basso profundo of whales. "Valar, who seemed so dispassionately curious about the ways of our hearts and distantly fascinated by meddling with them." I quite liked this observation which makes sense of the Valar, particularly in light of the final line.
"You damn me for keeping an oath in one breath, and damn me for breaking one in the next." Yep.
"He pressed his fists hard against his lips, his nostrils flaring as he exhaled." Beautiful description.
