My father was, among other things, a life master at Contract Bridge.  He told me once that, on the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated, he was sitting in his medical office dealing Bridge hands to himself, because he'd only opened the practice two months before and he hadn't any patients yet.  The radio was on, and that's when he heard the news.  ( Read more... )

When I was a kid, the Buffalo Courier Express, I think it was called, ran Omar Sharif's bridge column. I have never played bridge, but I read the columns any way because there was all this strategy going on. Your dad's columns remind me of that. Not for the bridge knowledge, but the story.

I would read them if you ran one a week.

Selfishly, because of my poor eyesight, transcribed entries would be easier for me to read than scanned ones, but I'm also curious to see the clippings.

Many thanks! Would you prefer to see them transcribed, or as scanned originals?

And thanks for the kind words about my parents. My dad's been gone for a long time, but my mom's death is still fresh and painful.

I found out about these columns from Beth Kevles after I posted a link to the weekend's NYT column that caught my eye. I read the orange duck sauce column. Seems quite similar to the style of the columns Frank Stewart has run for years, which is very entertaining while also informative. I look forward to reading the rest!
