Thanks for inviting us to your shindig! Great post, too. It IS a good time to be a geek, isn't it? Unless you mean the sideshow freak variety, in which case it's probably never a good time to be one.

My pleasure. And yeah, these are the Glory Days of Geekdom. It's largely because many directors, producers, and writers in Hollywood now (Del Toro, Cameron, Raimi, Peter Jackson, J.J. Abrams among them) grew up just like I did - reading Famous Monsters of Filmland, comic books, and Lovecraft and watching the Universal and Hammer horrors, Star Trek, and the Godzilla movies. These were core parts of our adolescence.

Add to that another huge factor: Movie technology has largely caught up with our imaginations. It's now cinematically possible to bring comic book characters and the wonders of Middle-Earth to the screen. When it comes to horror, however, I'm still of the opinion (as I know you are) that Less is More, so I'm more leery of how CGI will be put to use in At the Mountains of Madness, but there's no director alive that is better able to handle it than Del Toro.

First of all, thanks for the add and happy birthday! I believe that everything in the world is just a state of mind, including age. You're still young if you feel that way. Plus having a young daughter around will always force you to be up-to-date and keep up with the latest trends ;)

And wow, you're writing The Lord of the Rings! LOTR's always been kind of ambivalent for me- the most wonderfully created fantasy world and with beautiful images, but the characters are kinda black and white and most of my fandoms are all about the characters for me. I'm really curious about what you wrote, I'd love to read it :)

Lord of the Rings?! Oh no, no, no. :-) Nope, I've done work in the RPG industry (i.e., mostly Dungeons & Dragons-related products), but certainly nothing on the scale of Lord of the Rings.

But thanks for the kudos. The Foreshadows project is just getting rolling, so it'll be months before there's anything solid to discuss, yet I'll post updates here as they come.

Ken,

As I also hit a milestone birthday this summer, here's a piece of wisdom I've picked up that I'd like to share:

Sometimes, your whole party will just be up and wiped out by a zombie horde. Now, looking for someone to blame for this sort of thing doesn't make you any less of a half-devoured corpse. No sir, the best thing to do in these situations is just accept it and move on (at this point, probably shuffling and moaning).

Do with that what you will.

Felix
