A Letter to Georgia

After seeing The Airborne Toxic Event in concert last fall as part of their acoustic tour (with the Calder Quartet backing them), this was my theme song for a while, and even now, when I get to this track on their live CD from their concert at Disney Hall, I have a tendency to hit repeat - again and again and again. That the entire song is about 2: ( Read more... )

It's one of the many reasons I'm a huge fan of their music. Plus they are so genuinely nice and humble in concert and just so happy to be playing music - and grateful to their fans. Mikel still comes out into the audience after most performances for a meet & greet, and sometimes the rest of the band does, too.

Mikel is a writer - published in McSweeney's, in other journals, etc. - and he really knows how to craft lyrics. And then the songs really suit the lyrics, including playing with song structure, as they do here and in their biggest hit, "Sometime Around Midnight".

I just had an epiphany.

I haven't had new music since I moved to the UK. This is why I am so out of it. I sort of ...stopped. Everything stopped. There are just too many groups I've only ever heard the names of, and I don't have a TV, so I don't hear little bits on commercials or ...anything, really.

It's not like I've lived without music the last four years, but ...wow.

I can imagine playing this one over and over again. It shakes you...

This one definitely shook me. And I still love it. Big-time.

Afraid to love, afraid to lose,
afraid to stall, afraid to choose . . .

Afraid you'll change or stay the same,
Afraid you'll lose yourself again,
Afraid of the truth: that love can cause you so much pain.

You're going to love the song, Laura.

If you love this one (and, of course, you do), I rather suspect you will also love All for a Woman. I especially recommend the acoustic version from the "Bombastic" video I linked to, but the regular (electric) version from their new album, All At Once, is good too. Also highly recommended is their song, "All I Ever Wanted", whether it's the live from Disney hall version or the new album (All at Once) version (here's the acoustic version of the All at Once version). It's much faster than A Letter to Georgia or All for a Woman, but damn, the lyrics . . . And, of course, I trust you already have "Sometime Around Midnight", their biggest hit to date.
