I've not read either book yet, though I now own signed copies of both, but I have lots of friends that really love Water for Elephants, so I am looking forward to getting to them eventually.
The information on the bonobos was really amazing - they tried teaching an 8-year old mother, and she learned only 8-10 words using the lexigrams, but it turned out her baby learned every single one. And they have extended memories - when Gruen visited them 11 days ago, one of the apes asked her to come back and bring another Mr. Potato Head - a present she brought that monkey three years ago. The ape remembered her, the toy, and how they go together, and that's pretty incredible. The apes also asked her to bring her children to meet them, which was a huge honor for her kids. Her enthusiasm for them was really and truly catching, as you can tell.
And hooray for Wally. He is definitely going to keep me on my toes!
It's good that you have a sense of humor about the whole Wally thing. I actually chuckled when I read the yard part. Wally is lucky to have you to take care of him.

He's making quite a lot of progress, so I continue to hope he'll walk again (and pee on his own, too)!
