Whether true or not, it's been reported that Alfred, Lord Tennyson once said that others may have written better poetry than he, but none had written poems that sounded better. That's a good one! I actually have a novel where one of the characters is in love with Tennyson. Read a lot of his work as a result-- really enjoy it!

This one's new to me. I agree with you -- lovely and erotic. Yes, those Victorians were horndogs! I've never heard it put quite that way, but you nailed it :D.

Yeah - my vocabulary is pretty large, and not all the words are glorious, shimmering ones. "Horndogs" seemed to fit somehow.

I've been a fan of Tennyson since I read Idylls of the King. And I'm always a sucker for iambic pentameter! I so enjoy your in-depth discussions--thanks for sharing this.

You're most welcome. It's funny how many "familiar sayings" were coined by Tennyson, as it turns out, including (from "The Charge of the Light Brigade"): Theirs is not to question why/theirs is but to do or die.
