But it's the kid of movie that couldn't be made today or at least in the states. They did some wild stunts with those poor animals and there was no CGI. But Dudley Moore was fantastic telling that story.

Awww! I remember reading SOCKS -- though when you reviewed it, I also thought, "Eh? Anthropomorphizing? I didn't do that, did I?" -- but I loved this book. The movie was very true to what I'd imagined.
I guess I actually was okay with books-turned-to-movies when I was smallish. I do think they're more faithful to the text in early readers and MG books sometimes. *(And then I see something like HOOT and writhe and roll around and think, "No...")

I really don't think they talked though, just narration of what was going through their minds and how they reacted, etc.
