The Human Seasons - a Poetry Friday post

Here in New Jersey, where I live, it is still summer. But lately, in the evenings or the early mornings, I can catch a whiff of Autumn in the air. Nights have been cooler lately, and the trees have been filling with their various fruits - maple helicopters and seed pods, crabapples and apples, ripening nuts. I got to thinking about the change of ( Read more... )

Boy, he really did closely follow the Shakespearean soliloquy. I like this very much.

I laugh at how much I like Keats; I got burned out on all the 19th c. poets when I was in college, but I am slooooowly coming back. Once again, I appreciate a Fineman Poetry Post, lots of explanation and gorgeous music to go with it. (Aren't the Brandenburg Concertos perfect autumnal music?)

I thought he followed closely, too. Not that I can prove it.

When I was a kid, my gramma asked me a question and cracked up at the answer, but at the time I had no idea why. The question was "What's your favorite cake?" (I think my birthday was coming up, and she was going to bake.) My answer was "Whichever one I'm eating at the time."

I guess with seasons, I'm pretty much the same way, especially right before the season starts and the anticipation ramps up. In autumn, with the trees changing, the spicy smells, the crackling wood - all my favorites. In winter - yay snow! In Spring - yay flowers and being able to go outside because it's not friggin freezing anymore. In Summer - time to take the dingy out and see the water again.

I'm pretty fickle. ;^) But yay cooler weather and apple pie and pumpkin picking!

I like them all, too. But I still have a favorite.

No wonder your grandmother cracked up.

Quiet coves sound nice. I'm not there yet, but they do sound lovely.

What a gorgeous poem. I love the idea of autumn as a time for tucking in under wings and sitting back to ruminate.

I live in NY, and have actually seen a touch of fall color edging some of the trees. Always have mixed feelings -- I love the fall, but dread the winter that lasts so long. And I always feel the passing of time most heavily in autumn.

It's the dying of the light, I think, that does it. Those shorter days can be tough, even if the long shadows are delightful.

Did you and TadMack call each other? Thanks to both of you for the Keats' goodness.
