Extremely powerful. Snape's mind during that time is not a nice place to be, and it's distressing to imagine that there was no escape for him. His thoughts on Harry are so twisted and wrong-headed. It's disturbing, although I feel for him imagining that the wizarding world is in the hands of a boy he doesn't think is up to much.

Thanks for reading! I think that by the time of HBP, Snape is simply incapable of seeing even any humanity in Harry, let alone good. As you say, his mind is not a nice place.

I love these behind the scenes of canon fics, more so, when they let us into Snape's brain.

The ending is just so right and in character, the very pragmatic view Snape has of his own death in a world that doesn't hold much for him once his use has passed. And that you use Myrtle as a device to get this idea across is brilliant, the momentarily imagined touch brought on by wishful thinking.

"I wonder your brain isn't a veritable warren of gnawed paths by this time, Severus," she'd said

Oh but it is Minerva, it is.

Great bit of writing and you've motivated me to go look at the story this was a remix of! :)

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. The original is very good -- a plausible, well-written look into Draco's head.

Very powerful indeed. I especially liked that you paraphrased the original's last line to demonstrate Snape's death-wish in your own closing line. Clever remix.

Beautiful as always. These last two years of Severus' life worry at my heart sometimes - that isolated, resigned despair. You have captured it so heartbreakingly realistically here. I started with the original story, then moved to this one, because I knew that Severus would really show us what's going on.

Yet once again, you are pushed aside, doomed to be forever a tool in other people's grand dramas. They are the ones with the stories; you are only the stage crew.

This line just broke my heart, because I think that is JK Rowlings' vision of him. I've always said she left Snape to us, because I don't think she felt his inner thoughts and demons worth exploring, really. She always seemed so dismissive of Snape. I think one of the wonderful things about fanfiction is being able to get inside these characters' heads, and work out what exactly is going on there for better or worse.

Thank you, Teddy! You always leave such nice reviews. I agree with you: JKR just never seemed really very interested in Snape. But as you say, that's what fanfic is for.

What everybody above me has said really. You've captured him perfectly.
