I just got my mom back out of post-surgery physical rehab, so I say to you this: When he gets out, be sure to make time to go grocery shopping for him. Thank goodness Mom had some ultrapasteurized milk in the pantry.

And a note on eggs: if they're kept refrigerated, they last looooong past the expiry date. Seriously. You can get an extra two months out of them. I've been doing this for years.

I had the exact same thought, that I'd buy him a crapload of groceries when he comes back home.

Normally I keep eggs waaaaay past the expiration too, but the amount of eggs is daunting.

Your dad sounds amazing. My dad was wonderful, but when it came to cooking he thought peanut butter toast was a major achievement :)

Ditto on the acient eggs. After awhile stuff doesn't come out as fuffy, but they last for ages and can be frozen.

Yeah, I knew they lasted forever so I wasn't too worried ... but I still want to use them to get 'em out of the fridge.
