♥ I think I should try and brush up (and improve) on my very rusty Mandarin. Maybe my Mandarin skills might give me an edge when looking for work in the Netherlands (or anywhere else for that matter). Must set some time aside from my 日本語 study and dedicate it to some 中国語 revision

dutch is super easy. if you have ANY experience with german/english it will just flow in. i speak french and german and when i went there it was like listening to the two of them smooshed together with english and a weird lilt but some how totally understandable.
if you can handle japanese/chinese you can handle dutch.

It's not that Dutch is hard per se. I just find it hard to be enthusiastic about learning it and I think enthusiasm has a lot to do with how much progress you make. Sure, I can get by on an everyday basis, get the gist of newspapers articles and have conversations with my 'parents-in-law' but I can't seem to get beyond that stage.

in anycase at least you will have people on lj who you can talk to in mandarin and japanese!!
