I seem to have something to say each time I'm due for performance appraisal at work (haha). A normal reaction perhaps, since performance is always a highly subjective and controversial topic

I can truly relate to what you are saying. Sometimes going up the rank does not have to mean being a leader. Some people are better performer as an individual contributor than to lead a team. Often management don't understand this.
Absolutely. If you aren't planning to move up you're stagnating n cruising along your job - that's what management thinks. While it can be true for some, it isn't so for others. Some are optimal at that level and if they r doing their job well, why should they be pressured to join the rat race to the top? I guess it's perspectives and priorities.
