Wednesday I tagged along with a couple of lj-free friends that I don't see nearly often enough to see The Fall. It's a breathtakingly gorgeous movie. The credits tell me it was shot on location in seventeen countries, and I could see burning a whole lot of vacation time going to visit some of the places they filmed. The structure ... needed some work. [...] I wanted the inner story to also be a story, even though it has to falter and misstep with the outer characters.I agree and disagree. I think you perhaps missed something: did you realize there was an implicit third story? Apparently not, unless the implied third story exists in the lies the characters tell each other. I was considering that part of the outer story.

"seeing through stories (we don't want to see through)"

Yes, but. It did not work for me to both resolve "get over her, you idiot" in the inner story, and break the inner story as a story, especially when the movie then went on to be so enthusiastic about the old time stunts & movies in the wrap-up. We tell ourselves truths as well as lies.

At a level up, why go to the effort of making a movie without all the modern tricks if not partly out of appreciation of what went before?

The voiceover was rambly, and left me unclear on Alexandria's perception of Roy's potential for recovery. (Or, for that matter, on what sort of recovery he made, physically.) Spending a lot of screen time on old stunt clips made more of an impression.
