I may be one of the only people out there who considers there to be a significant distinction between the following, but for some reason I was thinking about it after playing Mass Effect

Nah, it makes sense.

And, sometimes the protagonist isn't the best, but s/he is the one that's on hand and dealing with the situation. Or s/he's in charge of his/her own story.

I often wonder "am I reading a book about this guy because he's interesting, or is he interesting because he's the main one in the book?"
