I loved "The King's Speech" so, so much. It was funny as well as superbly tense (the swearing scene! *clutches ribs*). High stakes for such a small detail of history, and they played it perfectly.
Ah! Someone else who has seen The King's Speech! I feel like everyone I talk to plans to see it but no one has yet, lol.
I managed to get into a free screening of it last week that was meant for mostly SAG people, and COLIN FIRTH AND JENNIFER EHLE WERE THERE. They did a Q&A afterward and I was just sitting there all happy and stupid and imagining Darcy and Elizabeth twenty years into marriage.
You're right about the pacing. The speeches he struggled with were the perfect length so that you felt the distress but not for like....20 minutes. The most intense bit for me was the very end- there was so much pressure and the director built the suspense so well. Such good performances on everyone's part...I was totally blown away.
Oh, I seethe with jealousy over you at that screening. How fun is that!
Phil loves movies so much that he isn't that discriminating. He'll enjoy Jack Black's Gulliver's Travels as much as The King's Speech, and since I'm sometimes just along for the ride (he works at the cinema and gets in free), I see what he's interested in. Fortunately, he's interested in almost everything, but I occasionally sit through things I would never pay money to see, like the aforementioned Jack Black debacle. Last night was a relief after a couple of consecutive duds.
I don't have the Firth lust so many other women have, and I don't know why. He moves beautifully, he's very handsome, he has a pleasant voice, but he doesn't make me drool like other actors do. I do understand his appeal, but in a detached way, I guess.
Yes, you MUST see this film. It's gorgeous.
I'm pretty sure it was Oofy Prosser from the Fry and Laurie Jeeves and Wooster series. He was only in one scene at the beginning of the movie, but I sat bolt upright in my seat and thought, That's one of the Drones! Then it was just the process of elimination after that: Not Barmy, not Bingo, not Tuppy or the Wooster twins, either ... Biffy? No ... must be Oofy.
Thanks, love. I'm doing my best to take care of myself. I should feel somewhat better in a few days, though I won't go back to my regular busy schedule until I feel entirely well again.
