Phooey. I wrote 500 words outlining a mystery involving a Horcrux from the scenario above. (It's just as well. I don't know how to write mysteries.) I appreciate your answer; thank you!
And I'll break from my own headcanon and say that I can see Snape being angry and bitter enough at Dumbledore to do so. ("And my soul, Dumbledore? Mine?") And if Snape believed he would be the only reliable thing standing between Harry and Voldemort, I can see how me might have wanted to be able to survive just about anything. But it would be like the saddest thing ever. Unless you can come up with a way to reunite bits of a split soul. Because damn, that's a plot bunny.
As for whether or not JKR said he didn't create a Horcrux, she also said Snape's a deeply horrible person, and we all know how much we regard that pronouncement...
JKR has said all sorts of weird shit since the books ended, so I can reject her canon and choose my own, right? Right. It's just good to know that it was at least possible, according to the rules set down by the book. Thank you!
Yup, he totally AK'ed the old goat. My head canon says that was one of the most emo-driven AK's ever - hence the flinging off the Tower. And it's your story, so if you want to play with the Horcrux idea, then have at! That's what fanfiction is all about, yes?
I was looking for a Sherlock plot bunny and thought Potterverse, and then it just went from there. As I said on Facebook, I just wanted to make sure it was a reasonable AU instead of a "WTF were you smoking, Trina?" kind of AU. Thanks, love!
Yes, as everyone has said, he AK'd him. To have done that he must have had hate in his heart. We can say all day he what we think he hated, but if he were angry enough with Dumbledore in that moment he might have created a horcrux. What an interesting plot bunny...someone who seems so ready to be done with this earth, but feels like he might need to come back to fix some things before he can move on. I like your bunny. Go forth and write!
