I've heard the name but I haven't read anything by Tamora Pierce. I'm always on the lookout for good authors! Is there a particular book of hers you'd recommend for the first one I read?
...I have a few in the queue already, I still haven't finished the last Tiffany Aching book Shepherd's Crown (I'm actually a little reluctant to finish that one because I'm scared Granny will die - don't tell me if you know!), and then I have Mark Gatiss' The Vesuvius Club that I got for Christmas.
Her books are YA, and she has two series: books set in Tortall, and the Circle of Magic. The Tortall books start with the Song of the Lioness quartet: Alanna: the First Adventure, In the Hand of the Goddess, The Woman Who Rides Like a Man, and Lioness Rampant. Then there's the Immortals quartet, the Protector of the Small quartet, Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen, and then you go back a few centuries to the Beka Cooper trilogy, which is what I'm reading now. Her writing gets more sophisticated as she goes on; the first books are enjoyable, though obviously written for fifth-graders. But I wouldn't recommend the books about Beka to anyone under sixteen, just because of the complexity of the plots and writing. It's fantasy, a polytheistic world with different kinds of magic, and I love these books to bits. Literally, in the case of the Alanna books; I'm on my third set because I've read the first two to shreds.
