Decembrists, Basement Sweets

I didn't want to write a journal about my move to Vancouver because I didn't want to cheapen what is a big, crazy, life-altering relocation by filling the internet with a half-assed travel log nobody would care about. It's good that I didn't, because the first three weeks had so many ups and downs that it would have sounded like the world's most ( Read more... )

Ah, nothing to lose. Sweet, sweet nothing to lose. How would we move without it?

I've never had an internet friend turn into a real friend. It sounds scary, but exciting. Now repeat that sentence, but replace "internet friend" with "man sex". Oh, baby.

Great initial Vancouver post! anonymous May 30 2004, 23:22:34 UTC
Glad to see you haven't abandoned the internet altogether. I've always enjoyed your wry observations and singular wit.

Hopefully, we'll hear more from you in the months to come.

Best,

Andrew from Fredericton

I haven't made it to an actual punk show yet, but there's one on Wednesday, so we'll see how it turns out. Just from walking the streets there are a shitload of super-poseurs, though. That's what's gonna keep me from ever getting a tattoo or a piercing -- I don't wanna look like them. "Haha, look at that guy, trying to be punk! Jesus that's sad!" So I figure I'll stick with being the guy who definitely isn't punk, but who knows people that are punk. And in the end, isn't that the true punk? Probably not, but at least I won't look like a pathetic jackass trying too hard to be cool.

The punks back home were great, though. Fredericton was a pretty small city, so they had to be dedicated. Which meant they were basically cool and friendly, but when a show finally came around they beat the living shit out of each other. I made a list of all my injuries after going to two shows in one week once, and I don't have it on me, but it involved a bloody nose, a hyper-extended knee and lots of bruises that woke me up in the night if I rolled the wrong way. Good old Fredericton.

Bars can stay open later, but anywhere that serves food is down at midnight. It's weird and weak.

$2700!? Jesus! My ticket out here was only $350 bucks. Shit. But if you do make it out here, I promise to have some friends to introduce you to. For instance, there's this guy Josh from Idaho who might be moving to Portland. I think I might get along with him.

why do people keep acting all surprised that it costs a lot of money to fly from AUSTRALIA (read the other side of THE WORLD) to the states?!
and yeah that IS expensive which is why i was pissed, but the next quote i got wasn't heaps cheaper. but yeah.

as for "josh" from "idaho" (if that is his real name), isn't portland in oregon? where is oregon? is that near canada? (thats a real question)
