4. FlashBack/Roadie

Inside the small restaurant, Aoi laid his face down on the table. Aoi used both of his hands to cover his head. Kai, who sat in front of Aoi at the other side of the table, gulped his soda. When he put his glass on the table, he looked at Aoi’s head that looked more like a clump of hairs.

“Their next one man live will be at Shibuya, Aoi,” Kai said. Aoi just nodded his head. “There will be a fan-meeting before the live,” Kai said again. Aoi nodded again. “I know this time we’re not that lucky to get the opportunity to attend the fan-meeting…” Kai sighed. “Whoever got the fan-meeting-pass were bunch of lucky people…” Kai grumbled. “But anyway, we HAVE to go there.”

“You don’t need to tell me that,” Aoi said without showing his face.

“But we are not going there just for the live, Aoi. We have to get your sketchbook back. Remember?”

“Yes, I know!”

Kai sighed. “Moreover, how could that happened!?” Kai asked disbelievingly. “Why did you run?”

In the end, Aoi straighten his body and leaned his back on the chair. He really looked like a mess that time. “I’ve told you, right? I was scared, Kai.”

“Scared of what? Kaoru was going to eat you or something?”

“It’s not that!” Aoi shouted. Several people around them turned their head toward their table because of Aoi’s loud voice. Kai nodded and bowed several times at them to apologize. “Kaoru-san is not that kind of person,” Aoi said as he bent down and lowered his voice volume a bit.

“I know that Kaoru won’t eat you, Aoi.” Kai scratched his head. “I was just… ugh… I just don’t get it. Other fans might run toward Kaoru and hugged him tight like a grizzly bear met a salmon. But you just ran away like a salmon met a grizzly bear.”

“Are you a student of veterinarian faculty or something?”

“Shut up!” Kai sighed again. “Anyway, we have to see them again in Shibuya, Aoi. This time, I won’t tolerate anything anymore.”

“But, Kai-”

“I’ll help you, Aoi.” Kai patted Aoi’s shoulder and he smiled. “Don’t worry.”

That day, Aoi and Kai finished with their big plan in taking back Aoi’s sketchbook that had been taken hostage by the Papillon Reel’s members. Soon, the two boys were already at Shibuya, in front of a building that had big ‘AX’ written over the front door. It was not the first time for Papillon Reel to held their live in that venue. Still, any fans who got the chance to see them in person at the fan-meeting might think that the venue was so precious for them.

Aoi and Kai arrived four hours earlier than Papillon Reel’s fan-meeting real schedule. As usual, the venue was already crowded with Papillon Reel’s fans. Even though not all the fans had the fan-meeting-pass, but they gathered there just to search for the slightest possibility to see their favorite band before the live started. Aoi and Kai were included in the crowd too.

“So, when will you get in? To the backstage I mean…”

“Later...”

“Are you sure?” Kai asked. Aoi nodded. “When? After the fan-meeting? Or are you going to wait until the live is over? There will be encore and any other things, Aoi. It’ll be harder to see them after the live, I guess.”

“So, do you think it’s easier for me to see them NOW than later?” Aoi looked at Kai disbelievingly.

“That’s just my opinion, Aoi,” Kai said. “All I know that the hardest thing for you right now in this case is to gather all of your courage.”

“You KNEW it. Why did you still insist me to see them now?” Aoi asked, depressed. “Moreover, whatever time I’ll see them, whether it’s now or later, I guess it won’t be easy to break through the bodyguar-”

“Hey, look at that..!” yelled a girl who stood close to Kai and Aoi. The girl spoke to her friends as he pointed toward something. When her friends looked at the said direction, they started to cause commotion.

Aoi and Kai looked at the direction that caused the commotion. They saw a black car that parked at the side of the building. There were big fences that formed boundaries to the said area from the one where the fans were waiting. If only there were no fences there, the fans might run toward the car without any difficulty.

Actually, it wasn’t the black car that drew their attention, but the people that were just got off of the car. They’re the Papillon Reel’s members. The girls called every name every time they saw the member one by one came out of the black car.

“Shinya!” they called. “Die!” after that. “Kaoru!” called the girls. The girls screamed like mad when they saw Kaoru waved his hand. Aoi, from where he stood, was frozen in his position. He gasped when he saw Kaoru was actually holding something that he recognized very much: his sketchbook. Then, after Kaoru, the girls continued to call the names again. “Toshiyaaa!!” And the last one, “Kyaaa! Kyooo! It’s Kyooo!”

“Did you see that?” Kai asked.

“N… no way…” Aoi said as he covered his mouth with his right hand.

“They’re still keeping your sketchbook, Aoi,” Kai said. “Moreover, it was Kaoru who hold it. Do you know what does it mean? It means they want you to get it back!”

“Bu-but..!”

Kai hold the both of Aoi’s arms. “It’s a sign, Aoi. Why would Kaoru waved the sketchbook if he didn’t want you to get it?”

“But… but how do you know that he knew that we’re here?”

“It’s not us. But you,” Kai corrected. “And Kaoru didn’t know that, Aoi. Not any of Papillon Reel’s members knew whether you would come or not today. And if they knew, they still won’t know where you are right now. Kaoru was just betting, Aoi. If he did that, there’s this possibility you would see that. At least, that was the easier way to made you know that your sketchbook was still safe with him. He just wanted you to know that you still have the chance to get it back. More than that, it means you still can see them… see Kaoru…”

“But… but-”

“Enough of those ‘buts’... come on!” Kai said as he pulled Aoi with him.

“K… Kai! Where are we going?!” Aoi was in panic.

“I’m just taking you there, Aoi. YOU are going to the backstage again and see them.”

“Th… that’s impossible, Kai!” Aoi said. But Kai didn’t seem to listen to Aoi. “Kai!!” Aoi tried to free himself from Kai’s tight grip.

“What do you mean ‘impossible’!?” Kai asked as he suddenly stopped his own step. He turned around and faced Aoi. “We’re already here, Aoi,” Kai said as he pointed toward a pair of white glassed-door. There were another two bodyguards and a staff that stood in front of the doors.

“We can’t go in, Kai. You know that they won’t allow us to get in.”

“Excuse me!” Kai said to the staff and it shocked Aoi so much. “We need to see Papillon Reel’s members. Can we get in?”

“Kai!?” Aoi tried to suppress his voice as he yelled at his friend who suddenly turned so determined.

“I’m sorry, Kids. But you all know that there are rules to prohibit anybody to get in at this hour. The gate is not opened yet and it means that you two can’t get in.”

“But we have to take back something that belongs to us and Kaoru-san has it.”

The staff was surprised. He was looking at Kai disbelievingly. Behind him, both of the bodyguards were looking into each other and one of them looked like he was trying so hard to hold back his laughter.

The staff then talked back at Kai. “Look, Kid. We don’t know whether what you’re saying was right or not. But we already got our orders to keep anybody away from this door until the right schedule. So, sorry, Kid. We still can’t let you in.”

“But-”

Then suddenly, one of the glassed-doors behind the bodyguards was opened. There, Aoi saw someone he recognized; the same person who talked with Kyo at the previous live. The person looked back at Aoi before he walked toward the staff. He whispered something to the staff.

There, the staff looked at Aoi and Kai and turned toward them to asked, “Who’s one of you named Aoi?”

Kai’s face turned so bright. He immediately pushed Aoi until he stood right in front of the staff. “Here! This is Aoi!”

“What is the thing you want to take?”

“A… a sketchbook…” Aoi answered dumbfounded.

The staff nodded a little. “Alright. You can go in,” said the staff as he shifted a little from in front of the glass-doors.

Aoi turned his head a little so he could take a look at Kai. He still felt unsure to see the Papillon Reel’s members again that time.

“Oh, come on, Aoi. Just get in!” Kai said as he pushed Aoi harder to make his friend walked past the staff, the glass-doors, and the bodyguards.

“Come on,” said the person who talked to Kyo as he took a hold of Aoi’s elbow.

As Aoi was following the said person, he kept pointing his gaze toward Kai. Kai just doubled his fists and mouthed ‘ganbatte’ again. Kai always did that every time he wanted Aoi to be enthusiastic. Aoi was immediately returned his attention to the person who held his arm tight as he started to speak.

“I’m Tatsurou, Papillon Reel’s manager,” said the person as he introduced himself briefly. “You’re Aoi, the free-pass holder, right?”

“Y… yes…”

“Kaoru was looking for you,” Tatsurou said in a low voice.

“Wh… what..!?” Aoi asked disbelievingly. Aoi then realized something. “Oh, yeah. Of course. It’s about the sketchbook I left, right…”

Without stopping his steps, Tatsurou turned his head a little. He stole a glance at Aoi. Tatsurou smirked. When Aoi saw it, Aoi waited Tatsurou to say something, something he hid behind the smirk. But Tatsurou didn’t say anything. Tatsurou just stopped in front of a door with ‘Papillon Reel’ written on a paper that hung on the door. Tatsurou knocked the door twice.

Again, when Aoi read the band’s name on the door, the nervousness attacked him again. Aoi gasped when someone opened the door from the inside. There, Aoi saw Toshiya stood behind the door.

“Here,” Tatsurou said as he pushed Aoi toward Toshiya.

Toshiya smiled. “You came!” said the beautiful bassist as he pulled Aoi until both of them entered the room. Behind them, Tatsurou, who chose to wait outside the room, pulled the door and closed it from the outside. “And it surprised me even more that Tatsurou found you! Where did he found you?”

Aoi was too busy looking at the closed door. “He… he was…” Aoi still couldn’t understand the situation he was in. “I… I was… my friend accompanied me to the entrance door… y-you know? We met the staff there, and the bodyguards… we’re-”

“Ah, right! There!” Toshiya chuckled as he kept pulling Aoi to walk with him, made Aoi in panic even more.

Aoi didn’t know where Toshiya would take him. Aoi was just about to ask him when he saw Kaoru sat in front of a big mirror with a lot of lamps around it. He was looking into Aoi’s sketchbook.

“Kaoru-sama,” Toshiya called.

Kaoru turned his head and he saw Toshiya stood with Aoi beside him. He then looked at Aoi only as he said “Thank you,” to Toshiya.

Aoi could feel it when Toshiya moved away from him. Meanwhile, Kaoru stood from his chair and walked toward Aoi. When Aoi stepped a little, tried to make distance to Kaoru, Kaoru hurriedly took a hold of Aoi’s wrist and made Aoi couldn’t make any more space between them. It shocked Aoi when he felt the hand was holding him tight. He could even feel his heart beating faster.

“You came…” Kaoru smiled.

“Y… yes…” Aoi said slowly. “I… there’s no w-way I would m-miss Papillon Reel’s live in my town…”

“Relax. Don’t be too awkward around me,” Kaoru said. “Come here.”

Kaoru said as pulled Aoi again to another chair beside his chair. Aoi could do nothing other than obeying the silent order. After that, Kaoru sat at his previous chair, beside Aoi. His gaze still locked on to Aoi. “I knew you would come… that’s why I’m still keeping this,” Kaoru said as he gave the sketchbook back to its owner.

“T... thank you very much... I’m s-sorry for being a burden for you... t-taking this with y-you... for my s-stupid mistakes...”

Kaoru smiled. “You’re still nervous?” Kaoru asked. Aoi nodded. “What makes you so nervous? Hm?” Kaoru asked as he caressed the back of his hand to Aoi’s cheek slowly.

Of course, the touch didn’t calm Aoi. On the contrary, Aoi’s heart was beating even faster. His nervousness made Aoi grasped the armchair to control his own shiver.

“I… I’m-”

“You said that I’m the one who have the biggest charisma in Papillon Reel… is it true?”

“Y… yes, Kaoru-san… for me, Kaoru-san is the best…”

Kaoru’s smile got wider. “Really?” Kaoru asked again for another confirmation. Aoi nodded fast. “Aren’t you afraid to this Evil Leader? Hm?”

“It… It was just the name that Toshiya-san’s gave you, right?”

“So you didn’t believe with all the things he had said to you?” Kaoru asked. That time, Aoi shook his head. “Then why did you run away when I showed up back then?”

“I… I was… that’s-” Aoi couldn’t control his nervousness.

“You know, Aoi?”

“Y-yes..?”

“I didn’t expect that I would have such a fan like you.”

“What..?” Aoi didn’t believe with what he had just heard.

“Yes. Not all of fans have that characteristic like yours. You-”

When Kaoru was just about to continue his words, there was an interruption from outside of the room. Kaoru looked at the door and Aoi followed his direction, turned his head and looked at the door behind him.

“Wait here,” Kaoru said as he got up from his chair.

Aoi was surprised because Kaoru lightly patted his thigh before he got up earlier. Aoi looked at Kaoru who opened the door. When the door was opened, Aoi saw few people who walked in a hurry in the hallway. From the shirt they wore, Aoi thought that they were some staffs or crews.

“What’s wrong?” Kaoru asked to one of the staffs.

“Kei fell from the stage..!” Tatsurou appeared in front of the door and answered it. From his position, Aoi could see the panic face very clearly.

“What..!?” Kaoru said in shock. “How is he now?”

“Tsurugi and the other crew took him to the closest hospital. I don’t know. We can only wait for the hospital’s report.”

“I see…”

“The problem now is…”

“What?” Kaoru asked.

“You and Shinya lost your roadie, Kaoru. We can absolutely put other guys in their roles. But Tsurugi was the only one who knows your best sounds setting, right? And Kei was the only one who can handle those massive machines that Shinya hides behind his drum-sets…” Tatsurou shook his head. “Since both of you rarely wanted to share anything about your music stuff…”

“Well, what do you expect? I don’t really like to let too many people taking care of my kids,” Kaoru said. “Today is a special case, I guess. Who do you think is capable to help me onstage other than Tsurugi?”

“Like hell I know that, Kaoru!” Tatsurou tsk-ing. “Whatever. I’ll try to search for it-”

“E-excuse me…” Someone called from behind Kaoru. The voice made Kaoru turned around and Tatsurou looked the voice’s owner. It was Aoi. The intense in-trouble-gazes from the both men toward him had startled Aoi. As he tried to calm himself, Aoi continued his words. “I-if you don’t mind, I… I know a little about Kaoru’s guitar sounds…”

“This is not an amateur thing!” Tatsurou said sharply.

Kaoru patted Tatsurou’s shoulder. “It’s ok, isn’t it? A little help would be much better than have to look for some uncertain people.” Kaoru then looked at Aoi. “You know about guitar effects, distortion, and the others?” Kaoru asked. Aoi nodded. “You know about any certain sounds I used in some songs?”

“I remember everything,” Aoi answered it without any doubt.

Kaoru smiled and nodded. “OK. I got my problem solved already. Now, we can have more time to search for someone who can help Shinya and his drum samplings onstage,” said Kaoru as he took a glance to Tatsurou.

“Ah, about that…”

“What is it?” tanya Kaoru as he looked at Aoi again.

“Kai, a friend of mine… he’s a big fan of Shinya-san, the one I’ve told you before when I asked for your autographs… he knows drums.”

“Is he here today?”

“Yes,” Aoi answered. “I think he’s in front of this building, in the queue.”

Kaoru looked at Tatsurou. “Tatsurou, go with Aoi to see this Kai-kid. After that, can you please take them to the stage? I want them to adapt as soon as possible with what they’re going to handle for today’s live. Since there will be this fan-meeting first, I think we still have enough time for them to learn about the stage too.”

“OK,” Tatsurou answered. “Come on, Aoi. Let’s find that Kai-friend of yours.”

Aoi nodded. He and Tatsurou then ran to search for Kai. As they ran, Aoi took out his cellphone to call Kai. It would be faster if they knew where Kai was without confusingly searching for him in the crowd and it would be easier if Kai knew the whole problem first so he could also prepare himself.

While Aoi and Tatsurou were searching for Kai, Kaoru just stood there and leaned on the Papillon Reel’s room door. Slowly, Toshiya walked toward Kaoru and leaned his forehead on Kaoru’s shoulder. Kaoru looked at Toshiya and smiled.

“I hope you like what I did.”
