I love living near my family so much! But my dad is retired and my mom is retiring in a few years, and they're really like to move elsewhere... I am secretly giving serious thought to just following them.

Thank you very much for your consolation! A dog has such a huge impact on your life (all the arrangements you have to make in terms of who has time to go out with the dog at what time, where you go on holidays that will accept dogs, etc.) that it feels really empty without her right now. :( Especially since this is the first time in my whole life that I have been without a pet. (Though a friend of mine just wrote to me recently, looking for a good home for a widowed guinea-pig... so it looks like I might be having guinea-pigs again at some point in the future
