dS Podfic: Black Ice

Aug 22, 2007 22:27

I decided to try my hand at recording some of my fic. This was my first due South story, and I still like the Fraser voice in it.

Fandom: due South
Summary: Soon after the events of Eclipse, Fraser has a bad day.
Rating: PG for mild language. Could be read as gen or pre-slash.

You recorded your fic? Very cool. Is this the new thing in fic, or just something you decided to do? I've never come across it before, so I'm curious :)

Definitely the new thing. The idea is that people can store fic on their iPod and listen to it anywhere, anytime. Groundroots audiobooks. There's been a few people trying it out in the due South fandom recently, and a podslash comm. It's a bit more time-consuming than I expected, but lots of fun.

Any requests for HL stuff you'd like to hear?

I don't have an iPod or anything similar, I'm afraid :) But I think that 'Olive Branch' would read well.

I won't even do a voice post, so the thought of reading my fic out loud chills me to the bone! [g]

'Olive Branch', eh? Sure, I just have to be careful about my voice getting all snuffly from the CRYING.

iPod=love. Carrying my entire music collection with me at all times is wonderous.

Great! Since you're sort of the offical due South reader these days, I'd love to hear suggestions you have on how to improve.

You're reading slightly too fast for me, sometimes I have to rewind a bit to catch everything. This could be because I'm not a native speaker of English, though. I like the way you do dialogue. I like the story, too, and grinned when Diefenbaker suggested Fraser might as well urinate on Ray to mark his territory.

Hmm, next story... how about Con Job? That is really my favorite of yours.

You're reading slightly too fast for me Thanks for letting me know! I'll work on reading slower.

Diefenbaker's just chock full of handy tips like that. *grins*

Con Job, huh? You bet! That's one of my fav's, too. I just have to figure out how to make it clear that the section with Gary and Cash is a flashback.

I just listened to this today on the bus to work and it was FABULOUS! I can't remember if I read this story but it gave me that good, satisfied twisty-gut feeling that extremely well-written dS stories give me. And your reading was great! You were very clear and you used a lot of modulation and tonal changes to get the emotions across to your listeners. I'd really love to see "Con Job" (ouch!) as a podfic but it might present some technical issues (how to convey those past/present tense shifts) or "Leaving a Mark" (mmmm, porn) but I'd actually be happy with pretty much anything you're willing to record.

Yay podfic! *dances*

Thanks, Alexis! I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. I'm enjoying the voice acting aspect of it. Also, I just realized that it gives me an additional layer of control, as an author. I can explicitly SHOW the mood and tone of a character's words and thoughts, rather than leaving it up to the reader.

I thought "Black Ice" would be a pretty easy podfic to start with -- not too much dialogue or action, and I've always liked the melancholy (but hopeful in the end!) Fraer voice in it.

The thought of people listening to my voice reading porn on the bus makes me giggle.
