I did some research, and the adage was in common use in England from at least the 1870's onwards. It was originally saying 'Bo!' to a goose, but I think a bit of translation for modern audience is acceptable.

Yes, I may have had a bit too much time on my hands today. ;-)

Yay! You used one of my favorite adages - and it has a goose in it too. :-) I like the interplay between Holmes and Watson in this.

But of course it has a goose in it! Its tricky, switching to Victorian-era speech patterns for a short piece, but its worth it to get a chance to write about Sherlock and John as Holmes and Watson.
