Challenge 15: Let's Talk About...

Oct 10, 2020 00:10

My question for the challenge is:

Have you ever dismissed anything (movie/artist/hobby/activity/job) because you thought you would dislike/hate it, but eventually came around it and actually liked it? If so, what was it?

I personally tend to ignore new stuff I come across - movies, TV shows, music - if they have nothing to do with the stuff I have already watched/heard.
Recently, I've actually started listening to Harry Styles and, by exposure, One Direction as well? I was definitely not a fan of them while they were still a band (and I admittedly cringe at some of the pictures/videos/songs), but I've grown to really like some of their music which is really fun :D

Yes! Years ago, I didn't watch series 4 of Doctor Who for ages because I really disliked Donna Noble in the special and didn't think I wanted to watch an entire series with her being a loud and embarrassing man-desperate maniac (which is kinda how she came across to me in the special). But then I eventually made myself watch that series and I absolutely LOVED Donna Noble. She's my favourite companion ever. Yeah, she's brash and loud and occasionally embarrassing, but she's also kind and clever and takes zero shit from anybody. And yeah, she'd like a boyfriend/husband, but she's also not ready to sacrifice herself and her ideals for the vague possibility of having one. She gets super excited, but she keeps a cool head and if needed, she can put a Time Lord in time out... So yeah, I kicked myself for not watching it earlier.

Donna sounds so cool! I've played with the idea of watching Doctor Who, but it's so long and so outside my usual TV watching habits I will probably never start it :D

She is super cool; hands down my favourite companion. If you ever find the time, do watch it. (You could always give it a try with a few episodes, to see if you like it. *g*)

Yeah, this happens to me sometimes. A recent one was a year or two ago. I joined an online reading group that was reading The Hemingway List which is pretty much all classic literature. Not my favourite genre at all. But I was trying to read wider, so gave it a go. We started with short stories by Stephen Crane, moved onto James Joyce and I ended up leaving the group when they started Anna Karenina, as it was just way too long for me on their timeframe (they spent over a year on it - the group read everything a chapter a day (with daily discussion) no matter how long or short the story was.) But anyway, I enjoyed the ones I read, but I really loved The Open Boat by Stephen Crane. Like, seriously loved it. I count it amongst my favourites now and it inspired me to seek out other stories that were similar. It was so good! But under normal circumstances I would never have chosen to read it myself. So... :D

That's so interesting! I recently graduated uni (I'm an English major), so I had to read some books/novels I would have never picked up otherwise. I actually really liked Hemingway's short stories - some of the topics totally shocked me in a good way (like abortion, PTSD), as I didn't really think such prominent and "big" writers actually portrayed these topics in "that" time.

Oh definitely. The first example that comes to mind is the entire genre of cartoons, which I always had a vague distrust and dislike for, having only peripherally watched some Simpsons and knowing about things like Tom & Jerry and deeming all cartoons violent and without any story or characters that I would be even vaguely interested in. But then I watched Avatar: The Last Airbender a few years ago and loved it and now I watch a lot of cartoons and I count She-Ra and Infinity Train among my favorite shows, so, yeah, that. Also more generally I dismissed DVD's when they first came out because I had so many VHS tapes and didn't want to switch, but then I realized with DVD's I could watch in English, so I started getting a lot of them. But obviously, that phase didn't last too long either and now I only watch on the internet, lol.

I can't think of anything right now to be honest. If I've initially formed a negative opinion of something, there isn't any incentive for me to try it out later. If I'm lukewarm about it, that's a different thing. For example, the tv show Vikings. I started watching it because (in theory) I like all things historical, but it was too violent and gloomy for me. I later met someone online who liked that show and talked about it enthusiastically, so now I would give it another shot. But it's not on tv at the moment, and I doubt I'll want to buy the DVDs since I'm not sure I'll like it.
