lol, here's what I take of it... the song is about someone vanishing as a person, right??? "the more I look the more I feel like I'm starting to dissappear..." that's what happening to Giovanni Ribisi's character... one morning he wakes up and realized he's dissapeared... to the point no one will recognize him... he's an entirely different person altogether, at least in everyone else's eyes.
I just watched the video for the first time, and I must agree: it's really confusing! It's such a fantastic song...I personally think they should have chosen a different way to go about it, though. But it works nicely, so I can't complain :]
I think the song's about learning who you are. Ribisi's character is unsure of who he is on a day to day basis and has forgotten what's truly important in his life...his love, his family, his kids...the life he made for himself.
"Who is the man I see Where I'm supposed to be? I lost my heart, I buried it too deep Under the iron sea
Oh, crystal ball, crystal ball Save us all, tell me life is beautiful Mirror, mirror on the wall"
He needs passion in his life because it's become monotonous. The iron sea symbolizes his emotions, and he's buried his heart beneath them.
