I think GIANT was terrific too. I've seen it many times and whenever I see it being watched somewhere (which is rare now days) I always stop what I'm doing and watch to the end. I really liked Chill Wills in there too, and "Sarge" was perfectly cast.
I've always liked Giant and its quaint, Norman Rockwell vision of Texas. This view combined with the very real issues of race relations in the Lone Star state makes an otherwise vacuous epic film exercise into something interesting and compelling. It still didn't do the Edna Ferber book much just justice though, but at the time, Hollywood never did justice to a lot of its source material.
But I gotta say - that casting was amazing. Liz at her height. And Dean just gathering steam for a career that would never be.

Rod and I watched most of GIANT recently. It's a great movie.
It is sad that James Dean died so young. We'll never know what would have been next
for him.
