school keeps you from being a recluse and keeps you up to date on social ettiquette and the new slang at the very least. The best thing about an education is that you make you a better you, plus if you quit, what kind of image does that set for Tree? I have lots of reasons for continuing an education... :)
I don't know if it's always hiding. Sometimes life just gets in the way. If it wasn't for the writing group and Big Car, I'd feel like a total sellout as an artist/writer. I do graphic design, but most of it's for a quasi-governmental agency that manages a public pension fund. Not a hotbed of creativity.
I think with Chef it might be more hiding because of certain personal circumstances.
You definitely should finish school. Even though you don't need a degree or college education to be a good writer, it obviously means something to you, or you wouldn't be doing it. And in my experience, going to school full-time is just as hectic as working and going to school. And you're right about the job thing, too. Most decent jobs require a degree of some sort (at least Associates if not Bachelor's).
I will finish school. It may take me another 10 years (or, gasp, more), but I'll do it.
You're not a sell-out. You're a real (and very talented) artist who simply needs to eat. Sometimes you gotta' do what it takes to support yourself. I wish I could be one of those stereotypical starving artists, but I have a mortgage and a daughter who needs things. That's why I do the job thing. Sometimes I also feel like a sell-out. I mean, how does working for lawyers help the environment or spread the love of poetry to the masses? The paper we go through on a daily basis is mind-boggling. But I suppose as long as I see myself as an artist, then I am an artist, no matter what I have to do from 8:30-5:30 every day.
