I love reading about badassetry.
Which is why I love reading the 19th chapter of Matthew. It is herein that he details Jesus' verbal bitch-slapping of the Pharisees. It's rather formulaic, yes, with the Pharisees saying, "Ho ho! How does your liberal ass get around this one?" and Jesus saying, "Didn't yo daddy teach you to read? It's all right ( Read more... )

I also love that the disciples are, as usual, total boneheads.

My religion prof once opined that Jesus renamed Simon "Peter" (petros, rock) because he was such a blockhead.

That's much more entertaining than the KJV, which goes on and on about eunuchs. (The KJV being what I happen to have a convenient computerized copy of, because it's the first thing I got when searching for “bible” on Project Gutenberg five years ago while playing with Markov chains. I have at least one non-Protestant Bible and a detached New Testament on my religion shelf, but that's in the other room and I'm lazy.)

There are, somethingly enough, actual translations which attempt to render the Good Word in, um, colloquial usage. I will now make devotions to an idol of Google, and: “The Archangel Michael, who went to the mat with the Devil as they fought over the body of Moses, wouldn't have dared level him with a blasphemous curse, but said simply, ‘No you don't. God will take care of you!’

I note the “ovaltine” tag.

Kate, you so need to take this and use it to enlighten the troglodytes in the PA House of Representatives. Apparently, they're trying their damnedest to make the Commonwealth as ass-backwards puritanical as they can. And I thought there was a particularly foul stench wafting off the Hill yesterday...
