[30 Days of Fic - Day 16] "A Quick Exit"

Jun 19, 2011 03:59

The plains seemed to stretch on until Judgement Day. Wyatt and Malcolm rode on in silence, their eyes scanning forward and back to see if they were being followed (or if there was a likely place to be ambushed, for that matter). It was odd; even the wildlife seemed to have deserted their path. They rode in silence for what seemed like days, though when Malcolm finally spoke, the sun had yet to completely set.

"Wyatt," he murmured, just loud enough to overcome the hooves of their mounts.

"Not a word out of you," his companion bit back angrily.

"I told you I was sorry."

"And I told you I don't want to hear it. Keep your eye to the horizon and your trap shut until I say otherwise."

Mal sunk in his saddle. It would have been bad enough to have cost them money, which was hard enough to come by for the pair. But in Tumbledown, the cost had been greater.

"It's just that Cecily-"

"Don't say it!" The older rider shouted, giving his stallion a bit of head to cut him off. He drew his revolver and held it in Malcolm's face.

"I love her, damn it, and there ain't nothing wrong with that." Mal retorted, standing in his stirrups, making a better target for the revolver, "That things went south wasn't my doing."

"We can never go back to that place because of your lonely soul, Mal." He thumbed back the hammer of the revolver.

"Maybe not today, but I will go back and get her. Mark my words."

There was a fierceness in him that Wyatt hadn't seen before. He held him there for a few long moments, then disengaged his gun and holstered it. "Not another fucking word. I don't want to hear shit from you until we get to the next town, unless I ask for it. For now, get to the top of that ridge and make sure there ain't no one following us. Then set a fire and make camp."

Malcolm swallowed and nodded, sitting back down into his saddle. He gave her a bit of his heel and moved on up the way.

"And Malcolm?"

"Yeah?"

"Next time you fall in love, I ain't gonna pull your ass out of the fire."
