I won't say I know exactly what you're going through, but I experienced something similar when I lost a very good friend (I think under similar circumstances?) a few years back. He was an incredible, gifted actor. He was struggling to find his way and had experienced a hard year leading up to his passing. I'm a better person for knowing him. I just wish I could have returned the favor and been there for him. I still miss him.
It's easy to take for granted that the people who drift in and out of our lives will always be there.
