Argh - technology!!!!

Back in the day (before Windows 8.1) when you bought a new computer and wanted to transfer settings and files from your old computer to your new one, all you needed to do was to find a handy little application called Windows Easy Transfer, identify which was the 'old' computer and which one was the new one, and then wirelessly all the stuff would ( Read more... )

Nothing I've heard about Windows 8 has been good. I did a much needed back up for my computer on Friday and that took 8 hours so I feel your pain!

The walk sounds fun. I had no idea that satellite dishes always face South East in the UK.

The really annoying thing is that Windows 8 was OK (I moved settings etc to my new laptop last year and it was easy), it's only since 8.1. I've found some work-arounds for Windows 8 which make it much easier to use but I much preferred Windows 7 :(

The walk was really interesting. There's a book by Tristan Gooley which is worth buying (I've got it on Kindle) which outlines a lot more in depth than we covered. (

I tend to transfer all files to my external hard drive and not keep anything much on the laptop itself. Don't trust The Cloud and that way if I change computers I just need to plug the drive in... of course, in a cupboard is the last external hard drive containing several years worth of stuff.. all very safe but inaccessible because some numpty broke the power supply thingy; one day I'll get round to getting that sorted.

Argh.. technology!

Look after that cold

I've got two external HDs that don't work any more and no way of getting the stuff off other than sending them away and paying ££££ to see what can be recovered. Luckily it was just music and videos not important documents and photos, but I'm taking backups of the backups of those just in case!

We used to do that (and we don't use the cloud) but since we have loads of storage on the desktops we never felt the need to backup to a hard drive. Thanks goodness for large external drives for transfers.

The cold is manageable - just snotty :(

I couldn't even try to do the easy transfer from our old to the new PC as the old one wouldn't start up any more so had to take the HD out, stick it into a dock and transfer everything that way - at least I didn't have to put everything onto an external HD first like you did though. And as I've got two external HDs that have inexplicably stopped working I'm backing up onto several different drives just in case! I'm looking forward to Windows 10, which should be available to upgrade for free.

Your walk sounds interesting - I didn't know about the directionality of satellite dishes - and I hope your cold gets better soon.

Thanks - I'm sure the cold will get better and I can be lazy on Monday ;)

The walk was fascinating - there is a book if you look at my reply to Kathyh there's a link.

The computer is fine and its a much needed upgrade because the old one was about 10 years old! Just such a pain not to have the wireless option. Apparently it's a legal issue and the simple Easy Transfer may come back again - I wish they had just said it wasn't an option!

My laptop is getting a bit old and slow - but I don't think I could face all that so it is to be hoped it hangs on for a while yet.

Well apparently the option for Easy transfer may come back - I wish there had been more information about it though! I was pulling my hair out!

Upgrading anything seems to have become almost more trouble than it's worth now. :) Never as easy as it's meant to be.

Love the idea of the Natural Navigation walk. Sounds like it could be great fun.

Firstly - happy birthday!! Hope you are having a good day.

The walk was really interesting. There's a book that gives loads of information (see link in first comment).

Apparently Microsoft pulled the option because of some legal wrangle about the security of the transfer wirelessly. It may come back, but I imagine they haven't publicised it because it's a long process if you have a large hard drive with lots of stuff like we have.
