Today started as a brisk chilly day (-1C/30F) - and when I set off for the station to go to London it hadn't warmed up at all. I went to visit an exhibition by a little-known artist
Giorgio Morandi in a venue new to me - the
Estorick Collection in Islington.
It took about an hour to get there, and I enjoyed seeing the paintings and etchings as we covered this artist in my Art Appreciation course last week. Under the cut for some of my favourite paintings.
This is a self-portrait by Morandi - he stopped featuring people in his work in 1930.
In the war years, he tried a few floral paintings (1942)
This is more what he concentrated on - still life with different objects. He taught himself how to do etchings and I rather liked these jugs and bottles.
There is a permanent collection of other Italian artists at the Estorick Collection and I rather liked this one. The artist Luigi Russolo painted La Musica (1911). He had a fascination with synaesthesia (the condition where senses often act differently and in this case sounds are seen as colours).
This was very impressive in RL - the artist Giacomo Balla was trying to capture the movement of The Hand of The Violinist (1912). I thought it was fascinating.
This one is Deconstruction of the Planes of a Lamp by Ardengo Soffici (1912). It reminded me of Picasso and Mondrian.
The Boulevard by Gina Severini (1910) - I loved the colours and would happily have this on my wall (if only).
I didn't spend very long at the Collection because it's very small, but it was interesting and it's in a Georgian townhouse which is pretty. After I'd finished there I walked back to Angel tube station (about a 20-minute walk). I used to work in that area so it was interesting to see what's changed in the last seven years (quite a bit as it turns out!). I caught the tube to London Bridge and then the train home and got back around 1pm.
After a catch-up with Mr Cee, I've been warming up with coffee and a snack and later we'll be going out on a torchlit Nordic walk. Once we get back from that we've got a meeting of the local Astronomical Society to go to. This week there's a talk about Arthur C Clarke which we're looking forward to. It's a busy day! Just time for today's question:
25 - A Room of One's Own Day: Did you have a room of your own when you were growing up, or did you have to share with siblings? Do you have a room of your own now? If you do, what do you use it for? Is it a bedroom or something else?
I did have a room of my own when I was growing up. Now I share a bedroom with Mr Cee! I suppose I also have a room that's just mine and that's the glass studio in the garden and is pretty much my own space (I love it).
