On a break!

On Friday we got up later than usual (bliss), packed our suitcase and set off to drive to Salisbury in Wiltshire for a long weekend.

The drive should have taken around 90 minutes to get to our first stop but there were roadwork EVERYWHERE and so it too 2 hours to get to The Vyne a house that was originally built as a Tudor mansion but has been adapted over the years and only owned by two families. Under the cut for some detail.

The Tudor house was huge and very much built along the lines of Hampton Court with courtyards and long buildings in a big square around the outside.

I’m 1488 Sir William Sandys owned the Manor House. He was a skilled politician at court and his son William the younger was major player in King Henry VIII’s court.

The house now looks like this as most of the Tudor manor was demolished but there are plenty of reminders of the Tudor magnificence inside.

Panelling, doors and stained glass -

The oak gallery

The chapel - you can’t see it very well but at the bottom of the window in the centre is Henry VIII and either side are his first wife Catherine of Aragon (oops! That was quickly out of date!) and his sister Mary.

There were some lovely Tudor portraits

In 1653 the house was sold to the Chute family and Chaloner Chute (who became an MP for Middlesex in 1656) set about remodelling the house. He demolished most of the Tudor building.

The family continued to own and remodel the building and in 1769 John Chute added this entrance hall.

I couldn’t believe how crisp this was!

Today much of it is filled with the collections of John Chute who travelled around Europe collecting things.

It continued to be owned by the Chute family and eventually passed to the National Trust in 1956 along with all the contents including all furniture and collections (very unusual!). The rooms are amazing.

It was a really interesting place!

After our visit we drive the last 30 minutes to Salisbury to the AirBnB we are staying in which is right in the centre of town.

We are off to another National Trust House this morning and we’ll be exploring Salisbury this afternoon. So far it’s been fun!
