(1) My talk went very very well indeed! :D I did screw up the bit I was worried about a liiiittle, but the actual important bits were fine, the talk lasted pretty much exactly one hour, people laughed in the places I wanted them to etc. etc. etc. yaaay ( Read more... )

Yay, congratulations on your talk going well! It will get easier over time, too, as you gain more confidence in your skills and presence. LOL, that after-performance rush rocks!

OMFG yes. I'm no mathemetician, but have the same frustration with people cavalierly tossing around bullshit as if it were fact in my own areas of expertise. Hello, logic? real logic, not fallacies? Real evidence, not speculation beyond the data or the alleged opinions of un-named 'experts'? Try reading a book? maybe even a book written this century?

Oh no, none of that is necessary, because they KNOW, and no power in the Universe can convince them otherwise. "Incredible self-important hubris" is about right.

I really like the Rules for Discussions as a codified reminder of why there's no point in even engaging with people like that. LOL, here's a mathgeek webcomic to cheer you ( ... )
