"They're fake", one of them assured me as they both giggled.  The human "they" in that sentence was a pair of girls on bicycles to whom I caught up today while I was out for a walk, as we all waited for a traffic signal to change.  They were maybe 12 or 13 years old.

The inanimate "they" to which they were referring were two lit cigarettes.  Each

Neither did I. All my siblings did, though, so I suspect we're decidedly in the minority on this one. I never could (still don't) see the point.

My parents did me the favour of smoking not-very-good cigarettes around me when I was a kid. Not very good for the lungs, perhaps, but by the time I was of an age possibly to be tempted, I thought they were just nasty, and thus was tempted not. :)

Oh, I'm sure anything I could said, like "You shouldn't be doing that", would have accomplished nothing, because they already knew that. :)

Besides, if they didn't have any mouthwash, it was going to be really obvious when they got home, if their parents cared ...

If those were noticeable enough that they would have felt a need to comment and giggle to a total stranger on the street who wouldn't have been looking for such a thing anyway, then the world has bigger problems. :)

Yes, and at precisely the age where they think they're ready, even though they're not. Twice that age and their internal judgment filters will finally hit. :)
