more Heyer

Aug 11, 2008 22:10

I know there are several G.H. fans on my flist. I could show a little consideration and not pour all my bile into this journal but I will
a) because this is my journal and I can post whatever I want.
b) because I'm still cross with myself for wasting my time reading this rubbish.

What is WRONG with that Heyer? )

I was staring at Regency Buck at B&N for the longest time yesterday and then decided against it.

I'm glad I did!

I have never made it through one Heyer yet, so I may have to try your one recommendation.

Another of my issues is (also in some ANI stories in the past - I tend not to read regency fics that remind me of Heyer anymore) that the hero may have plenty of mistresses and rakish habits, and that the heroine accepts this as perfectly normal. All he has to do is to promise he'll never do it again, which of course he will after the insipid pampered princess has given him a demure smile. It makes no sense character-wise. Men do not reform. You have to take one who doesn't do these things. Also, the princess (which refers to her behaviour) is very much the taker in the relationship. The hero has to prove himself and so forth, but she does not. She is perfect in her tower and she may even complain if he doesn't manage to climb up....

Such characters annoy me greatly.

Um, yes, this is all true, from what I've read.

Kay, have you tried Cotillion yet? It's the only GH I've read that I totally adored with unqualified love. The hero is very much atypical for GH and the heroine did not annoy me (which is about as much as you can hope for from a GH heroine). Oh, and it's hilarious.

*whispers* Actually, Regency Buck is my favourite Heyer.

I know, I know. I am aware of all the issues. I still like it. I can't even say why. I just swoon for the Earl of Worth. We'll just say I'm momentarily deranged.

But then, I like Heyer in general. I see all the problems you see, but still - to me, they make very good 'light' reading. We'll just say it's one of my guilty pleasures.

Haven't read Talisman Ring yet, but I've heard much good about it.

Hey sis, can you lend me one of your Heyers? I haven't read a single one but judging from your little rant it really makes me want to try it.

I need something totally senseless for my daily ride on the public transport in Berlin...
