Jinyoung never quite makes it to the top but she does. She ascends. The country reveres her, christen her 'the nation’s first love'. Her face forged on billboards and buildings. Her smile radiant, her presence blinding. They swear by her name.
Before her rise, he gets dropped. “You see, she’s more viable,” and they tell her to cut her losses. Meaning him. The last time he sees her, they’re both crying. A hairdryer is thrown, his voice becomes hoarse. He ignores her calls, deletes her messages. He doesn’t come to the door. He wilts away, away from her.
His descent is devoid of grace. He clamours through a red haze of fleeting highs and embraces the fold of milling bodies. Indulges in the shallow warmth each new girl brings, night after night. Rock bottom is dark and full of pleasures. And they forget about him fast; she burns brighter still. She becomes beloved.
A few years pass and he learns to live with himself. He makes peace, settles in a 9 to 5. Even makes friends who laugh at the prospect him ever being famous. The seven are throwing hoops when his ears perk up at a nearby commotion, he hears her namesake. Curiosity beats his pride and he chases the promise of her. The chants grow stronger as he gets closer to the passionate crowd of her devotees, he struggles to catch a glimpse of her.
And then she’s there, right in front of him. Beneath the flashing lights, her smile radiant as ever. She glows. The dull ache in his chest is gone and a slow smile forms on his lips. She was where she was meant to be. He melts back into the crowd and dares to whisper her name like a forgotten prayer familiar on his lips,
Suzy.
He believes.
