This fic is shaping up to be a bloated mass of writerly self-indulgence, so I figured I'd go ahead and post the first half (third?) of it. This part is plenty long enough.
The One-Eyed Wonder Dog makes her first appearance. :)
(Should I do an informative picspam of German Shepherd? I'll get that up sometime tonight, maybe, if I get a few yea-

LET IT BE KNOWN THAT THIS IS SNEAKILY SWEET AND COOL AND SMELLS LIKE A CAMPING TRIP (though only because my main contact with Nature is through camping trips).
Yeah.

I've been experimenting with e-smells, see. The fic sends a signal to your computer to expel a fine mist of carefully calibrated fragrance at intervals while you read. The results aren't back yet from full testing but it's probably only slightly carcinogenic. :)

I think one of the things I love about Jim here -and in the ramble!verse in general - is that his damage is never as pronounced as when he's ruminating on Pike. I like that it's not overt (and now seems like a good time to acknowledge that maybe that's because you're not actually doing any of that and I'm just bringing my own fun to the text). I like that it's sort of vague and everywhere at once.
Also, Pike tickles me. Just, completely. And I love Elena.

What's really interesting here is that I also think the reverse is true? I haven't written much from Pike's POV, or even much of Pike when Jim isn't present, but I do know what he's like when Jim's not there and what he's thinking when Jim is there, and his issues come out in force, too. I think what it comes down to is that they're profoundly, diametrically opposed on many levels (and scarily similar on other levels) so the collision is usually intense but never pretty. :/

I like the comment about their issues coming out more strongly when they're together, very logical - they're drawn to each other and still can have pretty big disagreements. But they can both stomach those collisions, I think. They need them, because it allows them to grow.
