You should write that Gwaine & Lancelot buddy fic! It would indeed be totally awesome. Why there aren't more fics about Gwaine already is a mystery to me.

the show realizes how fucked up and morally ambiguous Merlin's choices and actions really are
This is the part that's tripping me up with Merlin right now because...do they? On the one hand the way Colin Morgan plays it is subtle and dark and glorious, but on the other hand you have Gaius excusing everything Merlin does and the Dragon vilifying anything Morgana does. Yeah, they went with the whole doomed-to-happen thing in that episode, but I read that more as "Merlin can't stop fate no matter how hard he tries", not so much "Merlin is partially to blame". I mean, I'd like to read it the second way, but I don't think that's how the creators are putting it out there. And I'm fully willing to disregard authorial intent except that it kind of creeps me out if they're not intending it to be as dark as it comes across.
On a less squee-harshing note (sorry! You know I love this show to death no matter what), YES YES YES GWAINE&LANCELOT. *cheerleads*

This is the part that's tripping me up with Merlin right now because...do they? This is a fair point. It's possible I'm being overly generous in giving them the benefit of the doubt. Also, the Dragon is clearly an unreliable moral compass, so his asshole-ness re: Morgana is perfectly in character. And, frankly, I've never had the slightest faith in the creators of this show. I dunno, I've always seen it as a poorly-written show with great characters, so I just embrace the ridiculous crack and enjoy my own interpretation, the writing will never be up to par. But, ah, that's just me. :/

Oh absolutely! It just eeks me out sometimes to think how different my interpretation is from how the writers are (presumably) thinking about it. More so than in other fandoms, which is weird!
