Hee, I love your examples of other characters and they're serious grown-up moments - Donna, oh. And yeah, I definitely thought of Merlin as merely cute and fun and sympathetic in a teenage-angst kind of way, but then I actually fell in love with him, somewhere around this episode or the next couple - and really, his relationship with Gaius (and later, his mother) were some of the things that clinched it for me.
This episode sold me on Gwen/Morgana too, at least as more than something that was pretty and cute, with them being giggly and giving each other flowers - here you see how well they really know each other and how good they are at caring about each other. I love the scene when Morgana apologizes to Gwen for putting her in danger without asking her, because that's just something that real friends do but TV so often gets wrong (well, in friendships between women). And the way that Gwen says "Morgana!" in the scene in Gwen's hut just before Morgana is captured is possibly the slashiest thing in the episode, and also breaks my
