Okay, I've been wanting to pimp these books out since about a third of the way through the first one, but I figured I'd better wait until I'd finished out the series first, just in case the author went nuts and fucked everything up. But she didn't, and in fact they just kept getting better, so! Book rec! The Crown of Stars series, by Kate Elliot,

You should definitely give these a try. I'm very glad I stumbled upon them just as the last book was being published!
