I adore this fic. It's so painful and bitter and sharp that it cuts, but not the way a huge knife would (because that'd be messy and bloody and over the top). It's more like a paper cut that you can't help but scratch. It's wonderful. And the imagery!
Also, the characters are incredibly wonderful and alive. Especially Viggo and Dom, I think; Viggo is an artist and yet still real, in a way many Viggo characterizations who rely on the art thing aren't. Dom! Oh my. It's hard to decide whether to hug or smack him, and that, my dear, is very much a compliment.
I adore this story, its details and its wonderful use of imagery. Such a joy to read.
And, yeah, in my very limited experience with Viggo fics, I've seen far too many je-suis-ARTISTE interpretations. Dude. The rest of the cast talks about how devious he is. That side of him HAS to exist.
Gah. I love what you've done with this, so, so much. The shifting perspectives (aha, kaleidoscope metaphor!), the way each of them looks at Dom in a different way, kind of the way he projects himself, in the original fic, as a different person to each of them. And yet they don't read so much into it, which is such a brilliantly realistic touch - they can't see how much inner turmoil he's in, because they only see what he's willing to show them. Viggo nails it perfectly, right there in the opening section. Dom broods on the inside, and no one really knows for sure how much. But each of the other characters has these insights into him...Viggo with the brooding, Elijah with the seeing through the exterior...and none of them push far enough to ask questions. None of them step up and shake him and say talk to me, which is why I think he ends up so miserable. He hasn't found himself yet, what he wants, and everyone around him goes about their own business and assumes he's found it, or he will. Again, so real-life that it aches. And your
