The post about new TV shows

In my last TV post I said I'd say something about the new shows I'm watching.

Despite believing that this year's crop of new shows was even more dismal than usual, I decided to try out three: Undercovers, No Ordinary Family, and The Event.

I haven't watched Undercovers at all. I keep meaning to, but I've been too busy and I'm already watching...* ( Read more... )

I agree with your analysis of No Ordinary Family. Well, I like Michael Chiklis, but apart from that. :) I really feel like it is a bit too fluffy and if they tried to make it a bit tougher and grittier it might be a little more successful. It lost 20% of its audience between eps 1 and 2, and I really think that reflects a lot of what you said here.

I reckon I'll be dropping it, too. It's just failing to cohere. I will be surprised if it makes it a complete season.

I gave up on all of those shows after the first three episodes. I liked No Ordinary Family and Undercovers okay, but with all the other TV shows I'm watching, I decided neither was good enough to give an hour out of my time every week. Neither stood out to me enough as being original, and the domestic plots didn't quite mesh well enough with the spy/superhero plots.

I wanted to like The Event more, but I was frequently bored by the middle of every episode, and I felt like the time jumps were used more as a gimmick than a narrative device. And I hated the lead Main Guy. Flashforward definitely had a lot of flaws and I had given up on that one too, way before it got canceled, but I thought the pilot was much better, and it had one stand-out episode (called "The Gift", I think). Otherwise, it did lose momentum really fast. I agree The Event, and actually any of these high-concept shows, should always have an endgame in mind that lasts 2 or 3 seasons. Otherwise, it turns into AliasHonestly, the only new shows I'm loving this season are ( ... )
