Dealing with my grandmother

There really is no good way to do it. I usually just smile and nod, or say yeah to whatever it is she's talking about. Just today, in one day, she's managed to make me wish I were already in Japan. I'll tell my parents to their faces if I think something they're doing is completely wrong or stupid, but I can't say that to her. She's a racist and ( Read more... )

I deal with the same crap from parts of my family too. Basic uneducated, uncultured ignorance really.

But, you're kidding yourself if you don't think old people in japan aren't the same way. Many of them are uneducated and uncultured too, and think that all us "round eyes" are a bunch of fat morons with gigantic egos. Same can be said of some of the stupid kids there too. Ignorance is not culture specific. D:

I wasn't trying to imply that ignorance is culture specific. I've come across plenty of old people in Japan who are like that, and even people close to my age there who don't understand things like the point of washing your hands after going to the bathroom "because if you turn the faucet on with dirty hands, then wash, you'll just get dirty again when you turn it off." They can't even solve a simple problem like that.

I agree that people all over the world are generally uneducated and ignorant, and from what I've seen, they seem to be happy that way. I was just focusing on my family griefing me because I wish I didn't have to put up with stuff like this, especially from over half the people in my own family.

Well, just take heart in the fact that you're not the only one dealing with ignorance. I think everyone has to deal with that on some level every day. A large part of the reason I haven't talked to the estranged part of my family (mother's side) since Christmas has a lot to do with this. These are the type of people that don't understand why anyone would want to visit Japan, or go through the expense of college when you can't afford it, and so on. No ambition to widen their horizons either.

Being a naturally curious and ambitious person, I can't understand this kind of thinking.
