Chapter Three: Two Hearts
November 1st, 1864
Yuri stirred in his sleep, fluttering his eyes open; he looked to his right, seeing Aki lying there, breathing heavily and still in a deep sleep. He smiled to himself as he realized his arm was securely wrapped around her waist, holding her close to his body.
He nuzzled her head and she stirred too, whispering ‘Chii~’ as she fell back into a slumber. Yuri chuckled, removing his arm from its place, carefully trying not to wake the sleeping girl. He walked over to his balcony doors, carefully sliding a heavy curtain over, revealing the sheer white silk curtain beneath. It let in light, but not enough to wake her.
He looked at her, and realized what she was wearing; it seemed she was wearing one of the many silk robes he had lying around. Her straight black hair was tousled on a pillow as she shifted under the blankets. Her gown from last night was tossed on a nearby chair, with her shoes close by. Yuri looked down himself; he was wearing his normal sleepwear.
Smiling to himself, Yuri opened a door, and slipped outside into the morning sunshine.
Minutes, maybe even an hour, had passed when Aki woke up.
She stretched and yawned in the most un lady-like manner and sat up slowly. She rubbed her eyes and blinked as the light hit her face. Aki looked to her left; where did Yuri go?
She ran a hand through her hair and shook her head slowly. Noticing that the balcony door was slightly ajar, Aki slipped out of the Prince’s bed; she pulled the robe tighter around her self.
There, at the edge, slightly bent over and looking up at the sky, was Yuri. Aki blushed as she pushed open the door and casually leaned against the doorframe.
He heard the creak of the door as it opened so he turned around, smiling even brighter when he saw Aki standing there, blushing like crazy.
Yuri chuckled as he walked over to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders, they walked over to the edge of the balcony. Moving his arm from her shoulders, her wrapped them both around her waist, placing his chin on her shoulder. Aki giggled as she placed her arms over his.
True bliss. Everything was perfect, from the song the blue jays were singing to the perfect sunrise they were watching. They were together, if only society wouldn’t have looked down upon them.
Sometimes Yuri wished that he were either a commoner, so he could propose to Aki without a doubt in his mine; social class wouldn’t have mattered. Or he wished Aki were a princess, one who could leave him wanting more, but that wasn’t the case. He was who he was and she was who she was; fate was cruel sometimes.
“Yuri, I want to go back inside!” Aki whined as she tightened the robe around her.
“Oh, why?” Yuri questioned, squeezing her gently.
“I’m cold!” Aki exclaimed, shivering to add a little more affect.
“Pfft, fine. Ruin the moment why don’t you?”
“I’d rather ruin the moment than freeze out here.”
“It’s not even winter!” Yuri half shouted, releasing his hold on Aki.
Taking her chance, Aki smirked and dashed back inside, only to dive back under the covers. Standing at the door, Yuri shook his head in amusement.
“You’re doing this to torture me,” Yuri smirked into his words.
“It’s not like you mind anyways,” Aki replied, smiling coyly.
Letting out a cheery laugh, Yuri also jumped onto the bed, tickling Aki so much that she had to kiss him eleven times to make him stop.

Everything had been planned exactly to the Queen’s specifications; the Prince’s favorite dishes were being prepared, with absolutely no egg plants in them what so ever. Maids were being sent from one end of the castle to the other to fetch this and that for the big party that was to be held in the Prince’s honor. Technically speaking, sixteen was the age of becoming an adult.
But Yuri, to be honest, could have cared less about such preparations and such useless spending of money from the country’s national treasury. Did it really matter that much? He was only turning a year older; then again. It’s not like he had any say in such matters. He doesn’t even have a say in who he wants to marry! So what difference does this party make?
There was a light knock on the Prince’s dressing; the tailor, sensing that the Prince was expecting someone and probably didn’t want anyone around, shooed out the rest of the maids and bid his farewell to the Prince and shut the side door.
Yuri nodded as the door clicked quietly, only to be followed by another click, of the other door opening. Aki’s head popped in and she smiled brilliantly, making even the sun pale to her in contrast.
“Good morning, birthday boy. Oh, I mean birthday prince,” Aki said as she curtsied, her eyes never leaving the Prince’s face.
“Good morning my fair maiden, did you sleep well?” Yuri asked as he approached her, hand held out for her own.
Taking his gloved hand, Aki spoke “Well, if you ask, your highness, I must say that the preparations for your lavish party are well… very extravagant. I suppose the Queen couldn’t keep herself away, hmm?”
“You know us royals, everything must be the best and most show-off-y as possible!” Yuri declared, waltzing around the room.
“Haha, as expected from someone of your status. I presume you may want me to get down on my knees and kiss your shoes?” Aki teased lightly.
“Now, why would I have the lady I love do such a thing? I’d rather have you kiss my lips than my shoes” Yuri spoke curtly, his lip twitching at the thought of Aki kissing his shoes.
She let out a natural laugh. “You know, Prince Yuri, I think you’re having much to much fun today, but I guess you deserve it since you are turning the age of a man.”
Her eyes sparkled, her smile was inviting and her face was glowing. Yuri couldn’t help but fall even more in love with her.
They had stopped dancing a while ago and were now standing by the window, both gazing out into the gardens, completely lost in thought. His arms were wrapped around her waist, their hands intertwined together; their hearts deciding an irreversible fate. His head rested on top of hers as he thought of the very close future; what will happen? He certainly didn’t want Aki as some… some mistress of his. The cruel thought made him want to run and hit something.
To be honest, Yuri never really thought about the future much; being in the present with Aki was enough to make him stop thinking entirely. What were to happen to Aki if… if he himself had to get married to that rich, spoiled, aristocratic piece of a female specimen. It was enough of a nightmare to be in a room with a horror like her, but ever since meeting Aki, it was as if a world of light has opened up for him. Could he part with her? Could she part with him?
Thoughts began to come and go as the sun rose higher and higher in the blue sky; it was a chilly day, but a beautiful one at that. The leaves of the maple trees had fallen, leaving a lawn beautifully covered in golds, oranges, yellows, and browns. Perhaps when it snows, it would be like a winter wonderland. Oh how lovely Christmas would be! Drinking hot tee while sitting next to an open, roaring fire; opening presents, and kissing Aki under the mistletoe.
But those happy thoughts didn’t last for long; Yuri’s mind kept drifting back to the future. Could he ever forget of such a thought, even for just a moment? The answer was always no. No, he could not; it was impossible to worry of such things. The Gods seemed even crueler; why did they have to give him this destiny? Why couldn’t he be with the one he loved, why not? Did he do something wrong in some past life; perhaps it was a cruel joke karma decided to play on him. The future drifts closer as every day passes, as every minute ticks by; fate is still brewing, planning….
The future seemed much scarier; now that reality has made itself known… what does fate have in store for them?
