It’s You

It was a lovely summer day; school was just let out for the summer the day before.

Teens wandered around the plaza eating sweet treats. Little kids ran around, chasing a small dog.

He looked at her with his kind eyes. He couldn’t help it, he had fallen for her.

She continued to sit there and eat her ice cream. She knew he was there, she just chose not to acknowledge him.

He continued to sit there, and look at her. He drank in her image.

From her midnight black hair as it swayed in the breeze, to her rosy pink lips, that were still occupied with the ice cream cone. Her eyes were the deepest of purple, almost a black even.

Her eyebrow arched as she stared at him back, curious to why he was staring.

Keito darted his eyes away from her gaze, warmth began to creep up his cheeks. The burning sensation made him even more nervous than ever before.

“Ah-h-hh… gomen Aiki-chan…” His voice was just above a whisper.

“Maa~ Keito-kun. What’s wrong eh? You seem…” Aiki’s voice trailed off.

She was lost in her thoughts now as he was too.

Could it really be her?

Could it really be him?

They were wondering the same thing, not realizing that they both were after the same dream.

Keito’s heart skipped a beat whenever Aiki smiled, laughed, or just glanced at him.

Aiki’s breath caught in her throat whenever Keito would flash his goofy smile, or when he would make a clumsy move. She would giggle and he would blush.

Could it be her…?

Life seemed to be at ease. There weren’t any worries now that summer began.

Everyday they would spend the day together, in a sweet bliss.

Just looking at him, Aiki’s eyes would sparkle.

And when his arms would wrap around her, she felt as if she was surrounded by a fire of passion.

Could it be him…?

Everything about this new romance seemed perfect.

The shy looks, the sweet smiles, the burning touches.

They both wanted more, but neither had the voice to say it.

She wanted him, he wanted her.

They were meant for each other…

But as soon as school started up, the distance between them began to grow.

Sometimes, she wouldn’t even talk to him for days on end. Never returning his phone calls either.

Keito felt worried; trouble even.

He began questioning what he could have done wrong.

She never looked at him anymore. Her smile vanishes whenever he was around.

Keito’s heart sank.

Maybe… we weren’t meant to be…?

Weeks had passed since Aiki stopped speaking to him.

Keito couldn’t take it anymore.

He had to find out what was wrong; he had to know what had happened between them.

It was after school, Aiki was walking home alone.

It was now or never.

Taking in a deep breath, Keito walked over to where she was and gently grabbed her arm.

“Aiki-chan~…” Keito’s voice trailed off as soon as he looked into her eyes.

He felt lost in her gaze. But he had to regain his composure.

“Did you need something Okamoto-san?”

Keito flinched as she used his formal name.

“What happened Aiki? What happened between us?”

Her eyes grew wide, but they immediately went back to the coldness she had been upholding since weeks ago.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She looked away quickly, as if she wasn’t willing to face him any longer.

“You do know what I’m talking about. You’ve been distancing yourself from me, and all I want to know is why you are doing this Aiki! I feel hurt and confused when I don’t know what’s wrong… If you would just tell me, I’ll stop… I’ll leave you alone.” Keito chocked on the last words.

She looked at him with a steady gaze. She blinked once. Twice.

A lone tear rolled down her cheek, but that was all.

“Keito… I have my reasons…” She bowed once and hurried off.

The next day, Aiki didn’t come to school. The day after, she still wasn’t in.

Keito asked the teacher where she was, his response was that she was sick.

A week passed with no sign of her.

Worry began to grow as Keito decided to walk to her house to find out for himself.

The door was unlocked. Such an unusual thing.

The house was dead silent, not a sound was emitted in the strangely dark rooms.

He found Aiki’s room, and opened the door.

There was a note attached to the teddy bear he had given her the day after they met.

Keito, meet me by the lake tonight. I promise you I’ll be waiting. Love, Aiki.

Keito sighed in relief.

She was okay.

He looked at the clock, it has half past six. He should get going.

The water glittered as the moonlight reflects off its surface.

There, in the distance, he could see her. She was dressed in all white, like an angel.

Keito could feel his heart beat speed up; he knew it was her, it just had to be.

Sooner than he thought, he was running towards her. Then they were both on the grown, holding each other and exchanging passionate kisses.

“Aiki, I missed you..” Keito whispered in a husky voice.

“Keito I… I love you.”

“Oh, Aiki. Aiki, Aiki, Aiki. I love you too.”

Keito gently placed a kiss on her soft, sweet lips.

“I… I don’t have much time left…”

“Ehh? What do you mean?”

“Keito… I… I can’t tell you! You’d hate me for keeping this from you!”

“How could I ever hate you? I love you so much!”

Aiki let out a small sob.

“Keito… I’m dying.”

“No you’re not.”

“I am, really Keito.”

“I should have known, you were only playing with me”

Keito stood up abruptly, dropping Aiki to the grass in the process. She sat there and looked up at him, tears running down her face.

“I wasn’t Keito! I would never do such a thing!”

“Pfft. I don’t have any reason to believe you anymore.”

“But Keito I-”

“Good night, Aiki. It was nice meeting you.”

Keito could hear her sobs as he walked away, leaving her behind.

Later that night, Aiki had to be taken to the hospital due to an overdose of medicine.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The police ruled it as a suicide. The doctors say it was an accidental overdose.

Everyone was saying a bunch of things; rumors began to spread around school.

But only he knew the truth; it was his fault for her death.

If it hadn’t been his rash decision to leave her, maybe she would still be alive today.

His heart ached whenever anyone mentioned her name.

He was more sensitive now; more aware of things around him.

He’ll miss her dearly, for she was the one for him.

It really was you…
