It’s been a while and then a while, but I did return to skydiving. Go me. The toughest part was getting people to believe I am a fairly accomplished skydiver, never mind nobody knows me and I don’t have any evidence whatsoever to prove my alleged 400 jumps or so. Also I flunked my emergency procedure test, but before you collectively scoff, ask ( Read more... )

There's a reason for two-handed cutaway: so you don't stand a chance of deploying your reserve before your main clears.
For PC-in-tow - cutaway and pull reserve. Upside for cutting away: a suddenly deployed main will not entangle with your reserve. Downside: good luck finding that D-bag.

Guess what, you just flunked it same as I did! I was told I'm supposed to nudge the container twice before proceeding to cutaway, on the chance it's towing in a burble. Which really kind of makes sense except such a big deal was made out of it. But, meh. Back to jumping, anyhow, which was a huge bureaucratic mess seeing as I didn't have any paperwork or connections to prove I did have the jumps I claimed I had :)

No I didn't flunk it. You may not have the altitude (time) to nudge the container. In that case, you cut away and pull reserve. The main point was that you should not pull reserve without cutting away, as the reserve may entangle with the D-bag or PC.
