Review: Emma - Heartbreak productions at Dunham Massey

Jul 05, 2009 18:37

Last night I went to see Emma at Dunham Massey, luckily the rain held off and we had a nice picnic so it was great.  The production itself was very enjoyable, there was only five actors playing all the parts and they used pictures to represent other characters in places which sounds bizarre but actually was well done.

That looks a lot of fun! I'm glad you rated Bloke 2 as I took one look at Man in Red Waistcoat and thought he got my vote, even before I realised he could go from Frank to Mr Woodhouse, via Mr Elton, lol.

Yes, I noticed him right away, particularly when they were all wandering in the audience before the play started giving out programmesa and just chatting with the crowd. I was most disappointed when I realised that he was playing Frank and not Knightley :(

It sounds like it must have been an interesting and fun production! Using the pictures to represent characters sounds like a clever trick. I guess that's related to the art-class frame story?

I'm really going to have to get around to reading Emma one of these days, obviously. ;)

It was interestingly done, the art class bit was talking about romanticism and then used Emma to drawn out the theme. It made the production different than any I've seen before which was good. And it was useful because they used art to represent the missing characters and the changes in location.

Yes you should! I must admit that Emma isn't one of my most favourite Austen novels (which are Pride & Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion and Sense & Sensibility)but I like it more than Mansfield Park which is my least favourite and I do have a soft spot for Mr Knightley (usually anyway, not so much in this production)

I love that it was outside; that would really work well for Emma, I think. It looks like it was great. I went to see a production of Emma with just five actors earlier in the year as well; at one point they had a mop playing Mr. Woodhouse. Which actually worked quite well. :)
