Yep, that's right, I've actually written something. I started this in (hem hem) August, although obviously I haven't been working on it constantly since then, more like in fits and starts.
Anyway, it's a peice of Remus-centric Gen, set at the end of GoF and featuring Remus' father and Sirius:
Title: Plus ca change
Rating: K+
Summary: When Sirius turns

I was doing so well with reading (if not reviewing) both challenges, and then Twilight came along, and I missed a week of fandom, and now I've lost track of what I've read and what I haven't.
I'll have to go back and start from the beginning, I think. :)

I enjoyed 'Plus ça change' very much. It's clear you've spent time thinking about the characterisation of Remus and Sirius and extrapolated well from what we're shown in canon. I particularly liked the observation that Remus was always running away--that certainly works from my reading of the books!
It flowed well as a story and kept my interest throughout, as well as being wholly believeable in the details of environment, and progression of point-of-view. I could see it being canon with no difficulty at all! The spare start, with Sirius Apparating about, was a good lead-in, piquing the curiosity to keep reading and find out more.
I'm no English teacher but I'd give you A*! :)

More time than is healthy I suspect, lol. But seriously, I'm glad it comes across, because I did think hard about their characters, and I was a little worried about Sirius - I don't feel like I know him quite so well.

I'm glad you think so, because I think we see that even in PoA. A kind of 'reject people before they reject me' mentality.

I'm so pleased to hear that, because I worried it might be dull, given that nothing much actually happens, lol.

Now that is a compliment and a half. *grins*

Define 'experienced' ;) I don't think one needs to be an experienced fanfic writer to have the ability to put yourself in the character's shoes and write about them, just understanding and interest in them and you have that in spades! :)
I worried it might be dull, given that nothing much actually happens. Don't. That's when the quality of the characterisation into its own. :D

I wouldn't get too disheartened by the response at ff.net; I tend to think that romance, humour and angst (plus Teddy fics at present;)) far outstrip everything else in terms of popularity. I'm not sure if it's the age of the readership, but my gen fics get about a third of the review numbers and hits the others do. The romantic ones are miles in front of anything else...

You didn't and, to be honest, I tried to pitch the questions so that newer writers might say "It's hard to get going, to get my stories known, and get the reviews. It's disheartening when you don't." I think the discussions go best when you get views from both ends of the spectrum because we all started off once and it isn't easy. Hopefully people can share tips/experiences and encourage you that other people are in exactly the same position. I'm going to try and answer my own post at some point (unfortunately it's Grand National day, one of my favourites of the year, so I may be typing, "I think - come on Comply or Die!"), but one of my theories is the rolling snowball effect...
I certainly didn't intend to make you feel guilty - there's absolutely no reason why you should feel obliged to read my writing. You didn't and I was going to read it anyway. :) I don't get chance to read much gen, but when I do I always like Remus and Sirius fic. There's also a lot of " ( ... )

Oh good, I'm glad it interested you. I've developed a real love for reading gen recently, I quite like the way it resists labels. (I was a bit paranoid though, that writing something about Remus and Sirius and labeling it as such people were going to expect slash. I expected all sorts of angry reviews, lol)
I think Americans are much better at promoting their work, and don't have so many hang-ups about it like the Brits do. I'm hopeless - somehow it feels like not 'the done thing', if that makes sense, or as if I'm blowing my own trumpet. When all I'm trying to say is, "BTW, have just posted a fic, if you're interested..." But it feels wrong!I know exactly what you mean! It really doesn't feel like 'the done thing'. I feel like I'd be standing up in the middle of a crowd and shouting "Hey everyone, look at me!" which doesn't seem like the ( ... )
