I just spent several hours researching current military law, medieval military law, and anything else I could think of concerning desertion, to get a context for Rumpelstiltskin's actions in the flashback of Manhattan.

Yeah, that did occur to me, but I'd been reading so much that I couldn't quite untangle my thoughts. What really fascinated me was that desertion was so common, even expected. It seems to be a lot rarer now. From what I could tell, people would desert in droves and their kings would stomp their feet and go, "But you can't DO that!"
I find the question of dudely courage unmoving and uninteresting, and only pity poor Rumple that even after all these years it is such a weak spot for him. I expected to have more sympathy for Rumpel than I did. I think seeing an ogre and going "ohshitohshitohshit" is a perfectly reasonable response. But he did was he did as a premeditated act before ever seeing battle, faced only with the thought of his own mortality... and soldiers can't do that. I don't like war. I'm very dubious about whether there should be war at all. But I do recognize that soldiers can't ( ... )
