Harold, dear, do get dressed

Like every other Doctor Who fan out there, I've watched and loved The Ballad of Russell and Julie. I hadn't, however, heard the original. So I rather thought I should.

Well, that was certainly very amusing. I hurried to click the next Victoria Wood clip, which turned out to be even more amusing, especially since it concerned a word that's in very ( Read more... )

Oh, you've got such a lot of good stuff to watch! Yes, she's been friends with Julie Walters for years and written lots of great characters for her. (And for other comedy actresses.) *gets DVDs off shelf, considers what to recommend* Victoria Wood As Seen On TV is probably the best known series and has the Acorn Antiques sketches in it (parody of terrible soap operas, with Julie Walters as a doddery cleaner played by a grande dame actress) but Vistoria Wood Presents was brilliant as well, half-a-dozen one-off comedy dramas like Over To Pam (set behind the scenes at daytime TV) and Val De Ree (hiking).
My favourite song of hers apart from Freda and Barry is probably the reincarnation one.

Hurrah! I've loved Victoria Wood's stuff since I was a little girl and when that video appeared I so hoped that someone would be inspired to look for the original.

I owe it to the YouTube comments on the DW version, which for once were helpful - someone pointed out the origin of the song and I got curious.

Wow, she's like a female and rather more free-spoken Tom Lehrer (maybe that comes with being British?)! She's hilarious! Anyway, thanks for posting the videos, I've been thinking I should look her up after the Who crew thing, but never got around to it. Now I'm wondering how it's possible I've never heard of her.

You're welcome - I'm happy to spread the word! I can't believe I haven't heard of her either.
